The UConn Department of Statistics trains graduate students at all levels to become the experts of tomorrow.
We offer a Ph.D. program and several master’s degree programs for students interested in statistics, biostatistics, and data science.
Through coursework and research experiences, students in these programs gain advanced training in mathematical theory and statistical applications. They also join an engaged community of learners committed to service at the University and in our professional field.
Graduates of our programs work in diverse industries, including academia, research, government, health care, pharmaceuticals, information technology, insurance, banking, and manufacturing.
Ph.D. in Statistics
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Statistics offers rigorous training in the theory, methodology, computation, and application of statistics. You’ll work closely with faculty on advanced research topics and engage with an active scholarly community. You’ll also gain diverse skills that prepare you to collaborate and innovate in a wide variety of careers.

Master of Science in Biostatistics
The Master of Science (MS) in Biostatistics provides advanced training in mathematical and applied statistics, combined with specialized coursework and training for health-related fields. You’ll gain skills that will prepare you for a career in pharmaceutical science, genomics, biomedical research, public health and health policy, and more.
For students interested in: quantitative, analytic, or data science careers, or graduate study leading to a Ph.D., with a focus in biomedical and health fields.
Master of Science in Statistics

Master of Science in Data Science
The Masters of Data Science is an interdisciplinary, professional graduate program designed to give you the skills you need for a career as a professional data scientist. Students take classes across several UConn schools and Colleges, including the Department of Statistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. They can also choose to focus in one of several industry-aligned concentrations, including advanced data analysis, biostatistics, and dependent data analysis.
For students interested in: taking their careers to the next level and gaining marketable skills and experience in data science.
The UConn Department of Statistics is a proud silver member of the Math Alliance since 2017. Its goal is to make sure every underrepresented or underserved American student with the talent and the ambition has the opportunity to earn a doctoral degree in a mathematical or statistical science.
Prospective UConn graduate students can take advantage of the Math Alliance's professional development and mentoring programs. In addition, applicants affiliated with the Alliance can waive their application fee to the UConn Graduate School.

Our core faculty comprises more than 20 professors whose teaching and research interests span virtually all major statistical specializations. UConn statistics graduate students work closely with these professors in their classes and through research and mentorship experiences.
More About Our Graduate Program
Most students admitted into the Ph.D. program receive a graduate assistantship for research or teaching. The assistantship includes a tuition waiver, a stipend, and a range of other benefits.
