Sports Statistics Experiential Learning Program
Gain hands-on experience in the world of sports analytics by working side-by-side with UConn athletics teams.
Program Overview
The Sports Statistics Experiential Learning Program connects students studying actuarial science, mathematics-statistics, (pre-)applied data analysis, (pre-)statistical data science, and statistics with UConn athletics teams to complete meaningful sports analytics projects. Through hands-on experiences, students apply classroom concepts to real-world challenges while helping athletic programs leverage data to make informed decisions and enhance performance.
Interns complete projects in recruiting and roster building, in-game and practice decision support, athlete health and load management, and more. Weekly meetings with the program's graduate assistant provide ongoing mentorship and technical support throughout the internship.
Earning Course Credit
Course credit will vary depending on the team. Grading is based on a detailed final report written by the student and a performance evaluation from supervisors.

How to Apply
Our program requires course prerequisites and an application process. The teams available to work with will be announced when the application cycle opens each semester. Please note that there are a limited number of positions available.

Required course prerequisites for each major include:
Actuarial Science Majors
Students must have successfully completed MATH 3636. MATH 3637 is also suggested.
Statistics and (Pre-)Statistical Data Science Majors
Students must have completed STAT 3025Q or STAT 3375Q with a grade of C or better; completed STAT 3115Q or 3215Q with a grade of C or better; and completed STAT 2255 or STAT 3675Q (CSE 2050 or ECON 3322 may also count).
(Pre-)Applied Data Analysis Majors
Students must have completed STAT 3025Q with a grade of C or better; completed STAT 3115Q or 3215Q with a grade of C or better; and also STAT 2255 or STAT 3675Q or COGS 2500Q (CSE 2050 or ECON 3322 may also count in place of STAT 2255/COGS 2500Q).
Mathematics-Statistics Majors
There are two coursework options that can meet the requirement to participate in this program.
- Students must have completed MATH 3636. MATH 3637 is also suggested.
- Students must have completed STAT 3025Q or STAT 3375Q with a grade of C or better; completed STAT 3115Q or 3215Q with a grade of C or better; and also STAT 2255 or STAT 3675Q (CSE 2050 or ECON 3322 may also count in place of STAT 2255).
