Borrowing from a rich and varied experience in a medical research environment, this presentation will provide insights and guidance garnered through the years to aspiring statisticians, consultants and future Biostatistics Department leaders. Perspectives from the realm of statistical consulting in the medical field will be presented, focusing on the core skills, methods, values and guidelines that strengthen career pathways in applied statistics. Select projects from a wide array of disciplines at the Northwell-Biostatistics Unit will be discussed briefly, highlighting their impact in the field as well as applicable methodologies and notable challenges encountered.

Speaker Bio:

Cristina Sison, PhD ’95, is currently Director of the Biostatistics Unit within the Office of Academic Affairs at Northwell Health, a nonprofit healthcare network based in Long Island, New York. Dr Sison has over 25 years of experience in the field of medical research, serving as statistical consultant on various investigator-initiated projects and funded projects. Dr Sison has provided statistical expertise for a wide range of research activities at Northwell, as well as hospitals in the New York metropolitan area. Dr Sison has collaborated with clinician scientists in the field of immunology, cardiology, oncology, rheumatology, endocrinology, radiology, to name a few, resulting in numerous abstracts, publications, funded grants and presentations. Dr Sison holds academic appointments at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and the Department of Molecular Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, actively providing educational support for residency programs and engaging in teaching activities within the Health system.
